Mid-Week Devotional from Pastor Bud
Who Has Jesus Called Me to Carry the Message To?
This is the challenge Pastor Andrew left with us on Sunday from Acts 9. God said to Ananias in Acts 9:15, “Go! This man (Saul/Paul) is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people Israel”. This underlines what God wanted Israel to do with the nations around them, and it repeats what Jesus is asking us, His followers, to do in Matthew 28:19,20. This is what Luke, in Acts 1:8, remembered Jesus saying to the disciples and in turn to us; “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem (where you live), and in all Judea and Samaria (where your near neighbours live), and to the ends of the earth (where others live that you might seldom or never see but who need Jesus
On Saturday we sat on a patio a safe distance from each other saying farewell to a special retired Pastor couple. They are moving from Burlington to Penticton, BC, to live in an in-law apartment their daughter and family have built for them. He related a story that mirrors Paul’s story in Acts 9 to a great degree. Here it is…
A mutual Pastor friend was asked to underline the Good News story of Jesus with a lady whom one of his parishioners had repeatedly witnessed to. This lady felt she could not became a committed follower of Jesus because she did not want to be in heaven while her mother, who did not want anything to do with Jesus, would be in hell. She and her mother were extremely close and were the best possible friends.
However, after a few meetings with this Pastor she fully surrendered her life to Christ and became a Christ follower. After praying for her sins to be forgiven and placing her faith in Christ she said to our Pastor friend, “Please stay while I call my Mom in Montreal to tell her what I’ve done. If I don’t do it now I will lose courage and put it off, for who knows how long”.
She called her Mom and, as she began to tell her story, her mother interrupted and said, “I too prayed to accept Jesus Christ and am overwhelmed with joy”. Her daughter asked how it happened? She replied, “I met this man in my apartment elevator and he shared the story of Jesus Christ and the purpose of His death. My mind and heart cried out to Him and I’m saved”.
Later it was revealed that the man who shared Jesus with her mom was another mutual Pastor friend who was a long time Pastor in a downtown Montreal church.
Both mother and daughter became even closer and will enjoy heaven together because two different people faithfully shared Jesus with their neighbours. We are all called to do the same. Share the Good News where you’re planted.
